Water Filters for Camping?

I am trying to choose a water filter for camping in the UK. I have had a look at several options including the Katadyn Vario (http://www.katadyn.com/usen/katadyn-products/products/katadynshopconnect/katadyn-water-filters-backcountry-series-products/katadyn-vario-usa/) and the Platypus CleanStream™ Gravity Filter (http://cascadedesigns.com/platypus/filtration-and-storage/cleanstream-gravity-filter/product) however I am not sure what is best.

I am most interested in the Platypus filter as is great value and easy to use.

Filtration/Purification?

I’m planning a 3 day hike in California which will pass through several miles of grazing land. All available water will be heavily polluted by cattle.

I also want a portable filtration/purification system for any SHTF situation, a la, Katrina or earthquake. My cost cap is about 0.00-0.00 and the system must be very portable. Please be specific about the need for replacement parts in any system.

Going to hike the Inca Trail in Peru! I have been told to bring water purification tablets. Would a water purification and filtration bottle work too? I saw one for about in a camping store. Are they worth it?
