purifying water on a camping/hiking trip?

We are somewhat inexperienced hikers that are in charge of a scout trip for older kids. When we have talked about filtering water from a reservior for an overnight canoe trip and hiking trip everyone keeps saying "well I suggest you take as much water as you can" or "I don’t know about those tablets, I wouldn’t trust them" or "I wouldn’t trust those filters". We have potable aqua tablets and new but older models of sweetwater walkabout microfilters. Am I being naive or are these people just being critical? None of them hike or camp without a full kitchen in tow. I would like the kids to learn how to do these things and take a step closer to truly "roughing it", but I do not want to put them unnecassarily at risk for illness.

Sport Berkey Portable Water Purifier

Around Christmas I bought a Sport Berkey portable water purifier on ebay for about . I had planned to use it this summer and do a revue on it. From what I have read about the Sport Berkey I really thought it would make a very nice, light-weight, inexpensive (in other words, cheap) water filter that would be relatively safe. According to the Sport Berkey people their filter will remove up to 99.9% of many health-threatening contaminants, including harmful pathogens, pesticides, detergents, Aluminum, Mercury, Radon 222, and such using something called the Ionic Adsorption Micro Filtration System. It has a shelf life of 50 years. Then we had a situation here where the Township informed us that the water supply is contaminated with Ecoli bacteria and that we should boil any water that we wanted to drink. With that I figured now would be a good time to put the Sport Berkey to test. In this video I am trying a test that I’ve seen where blue food dye is filtered through the Sport Berkey. It indeed does filter out the blue food dye completely. In the video I mentioned that the bottle could be refilled 160 times from sources like streams and 640 times from Municipal water supplies. What I failed to mention is the capacity of the bottle. With the filter in place the bottle holds 22 fl oz, but I doubt that more than 16 fl oz could be gotten out of the bottle at one time. What is the best portable water filter to use for hiking / travel?

I’m looking for something that really works well. A purifier, not just a filter. Something .2 micron (or smaller) and with a built-in way to automatically chemically treat the water (iodine/chlorine etc). There are several on the market and I’m looking for other peoples experiences and opinions. Something that could be used full time for weeks at a time on long trips where your only water source is creeks and lakes and in countries with questionable tap water.

Where Can I Find Katadyn Pro Hiker Water Filter Reviews?

I’m been checking out some different Katadyn water purifiers and my friend told me that the Katadyn pro hiker water filter was a great product for the price. I would like to see what others have to say about the Katadyan pro hiker though and was looking for some reviews or references.

Whatever model I decide on, I will mostly need it for backpacking and camping trips that we take throughout the summer.

Also, are their any other models besides the Katadyn pro hiker water filter that people also recommend?

What about other brands? Is Katadyn the way to go or are their some other manufacturers that can compete?

What is the smallest Katadyn water filter?

Looking forward to your responses and thanks for your help.
